The Casio CZ-5000 synthesizer, released in Japan in the 1980s, is an interesting synth built on Casio's Phase Distortion digital synthesis technology. Phase Distortion is in some ways similar to Yamaha's Frequency Modulation (FM) synthesis, and in both methods, the frequency components of a carrier waveform are modulated by another waveform. Although the sounds of Casio's CZ synthesizers, including the CZ-5000, can be reminiscent of Yamaha's DX7 (their flagship FM synth), the Casio Phase Distortion synths have their own unique characteristics in their sound. The CZ-5000 sounds are interesting, usable, and well-regarded by synthesizer enthusiasts. Due to the nature of Phase Distortion synthesis, the sounds of the CZ-5000 sound subjectively more “analog” or “traditional” in comparison with FM synths. Along with the CZ-1, This CZ-5000 is arguably the top of the CZ line, with a huge range of features, a highly tactile interface, ample memory, and a nice keyboard. This thing would be awesome for a live performance! Overall, the CZ-5000 is a fantastic and unique digital synthesizer with a fully professional package, yet offered at a great price.
